It's been months since I last posted, and so much has happened. Fall ended in a blur and whirlwind, with a job interview, a job offer and a major life change/move.

I was offered a job at the other end of Canada - near Victoria, British Columbia. My husband and I have been living in Gatineau/Ottawa for nearly 6 years and it meant giving up the friends I made and also my husband's job. We decided it was time, as Ottawa wasn't really the city for us.

So at the end of October I had my last day at work, and spent the next month with my family, seeing all my friends in Ottawa and then making my way to BC. I decided to drive the trip, as it would probably be one of the few times in my life I would have the chance to do so. My sister-in-law took the train from Winnipeg to join me in Ottawa and we set out. My husband would finish up his work and the packing and join me in BC just in time for Christmas.

I didn't find any yarn along the way, but there was just so much to see I wasn't really looking for any. Probably the first time in years that's happened! My favourite places along the way were Chicago and California.

As for crafting projects, I brought along a few knitting projects to tide me over until February when we would move out of a temporary place and into an apartment.

Victoria has an amazing yarn shop, Beehive Wool Shop, and my old coworkers were kind enough to get me a gift certificate to the shop, so I also bought a few skeins for projects.

Two weeks ago I attended the Twist Festival (along with taking the dyeing course), and thought it was great! So many different booths, with yarn I had heard of, but never seen before!

From Twist I took home:

3 skeins of Cottage Craft Qiviut Queen, 2 skeins of Riverside Studio Superwash Merino Lace Singles and my sister was nice enough to give me her sample of Yvieknits Sparkly Sock.

Today, I visited the Mississippi Mills Annual Fibrefest, and it blew me away! Everyone was so nice, and we stopped to chat with almost everyone! The festival had everything you could ever want from fibre - art, yarn, roving, fabric, beads, embroidery, buttons and knitted, woven and felted goods! I took home:

1 skein of Turtlpurl Moon Beam, 2 half yards of Rashida Coleman-Hale's Koi Collection in Don't Be Koi and Ebb and Flow, a celluloid button in blue and white which I think looks like coral, 2 packs of 6/0 beads in blue, and 3 vintage brooches.

It was an all day workshop in Saint-Andre-Avellin, QC. And it was amazing!

As a beginner dyer I learned so much about using natural products. I also learned that if you want to replicate your work, then you have to be good at math, take notes and measure! Kind of like baking.

We worked on 6 dye baths to get a rainbow sample - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.

There was also a little bit of free experimentation with the green and tried out cochineal.

The class was quite large (about 15 people), so Jackie was the one doing most of the dyeing, while we all looked on. We learnt how to get an extract from wood chips, and how adding modifiers can change the results of your colours.
I did this past weekend. I have 4 bins of yarn and since one of my goals is to knit what's in my stash I figured I should sort it. Everything was in the bins randomly so I emptied them out, gasped at the amount of yarn was sitting on my floor, and began sorting. Now I have 4 bins sorted as such: 1 bin for sweater, dress, skirt yarn; 1 bin for all my sock yarn; 1 bin for fingering and lace yarn; and 1 bin for the rest (dk, worsted, etc.). My priorities for the year are clearer: knit sweaters and socks!Tankini Surfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15496384176229388561noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7336461875114942441.post-56601099440878285992013-01-10T18:35:00.000-08:002013-01-10T18:35:55.478-08:002012 goals recap and 2013 goals2012's goals were not extremely successful so I'm having a hard time knowing what to set for this year.

Goals from 2012:
1) not buy any yarn. I definitely ended up buying yarn, but I thought about what to get before purchasing, which was better than just getting random skeins at whim. I thought, what can I make with this yarn? And if I could think of a good project, I bought it.

2) knit up as much as I can/want from my stash. I knit 21 projects in 2012, and 11 of them were from stashed yarn purchased before 2012. The rest were from yarn I bought for the project or received through the Tanis Fiber Arts Year In Colour Club.

3) knit up a number of last year's Tanis Fiber Arts' club patterns. I wasn't very successful with this one. I didn't knit any projects from last year's club, and only 1 from this year's. The yarn and patterns were great, but I was always knitting something else.

I've thought about my 2013 goals and I'm going to keep them specific but simple:
1) finish animal cross stitch I have been neglecting for 5 years!
2) continue to knit up yarn from stash
3) knit at least 1 sweater

I think these are feasible goals.

For 2012, I managed to knit 8 scarves/shawls/cowls, 2 pairs of legwarmers, 1 ipod cozy, 3 pairs of mittens, 2 sweaters, 1 baby sweater, 1 pair of socks, and 3 hats. Here's a collage of some of those finished projects.

These were knit with a kit from Tanis Fiber Arts, made with Yellow Label DK weight yarn in Pinks and Purples.

They are lined, and fantastic! I've worn them for 2 days now in the cold, cold weather we've been having and they are extremely warm. I may never go back to un-lined mittens again!

I decided to join in and knit my Fiddleheads mitten kit, which I got last year as a birthday present.

I decided on my colour ordering, and it's the first time I'll be working with colour work.

I've been working on it for 3 days now and I've already completed 2 colours.
So far it's been great. The veggies are healthy looking and abundant. We even got fruit a few times!

We decided to go with La Ferme Rosée in Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix, Quebec. The farm is all organic and the pick up is just down the street from us.

Last week's haul was the best yet.

We got: corn, chinese cabbage, eggplant, lettuce, cucumber, green pepper, kohlrabi, tomatoes, green onions, yellow summer squash, carrots, cherry tomatoes, garlic and peas!

On the knitting front, I finished a few projects over the summer including this cute baby sweater. The pattern is Sunnyside by Tanis Lavallée. I like naming my projects based on the colour name and the project name. This yarn didn't have a colour name (just a number) so I've called it camouflage sunnyside. Now all it needs is a baby to wear it. My nephew is too old now. I must befriend a pregnant woman.

Earlier this spring I managed to get my marrakesch socks a pair of socks done. I love the yarn - it's self-striping! My feet are so small, I only used half a ball of the yarn, so I can make a second pair with what's left.

On other craft fronts, I've decided to take up jewellery-making! I'm not sure how successful it will be, but I plan on taking a course at our local bead store to start off. I took some time on the weekend to draft up some designs, and I really enjoyed the creativity which came from it.Tankini Surfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15496384176229388561noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7336461875114942441.post-74888037244918987692012-05-27T14:02:00.000-07:002012-05-27T14:02:03.045-07:00Yarn DyeingI tried my hand at dyeing yarn again this weekend. This time with Wilton's food dye. The result was interesting, and the colour split up quite a lot. It came out purple, pink and blue! I'm going to use it to knit up Goodale Sweater.

The formula:

Knit Picks Peruvian Highland Wool in Fingering

Wilton's Violet Icing Dye

Vinegar

Steps I took:

Soaked the yarn in lukewarm water for about 30 minutes.

Heated up a full pot of water on high (electric stove). When steam began rising, I turned it down to 4 and put in the yarn.

Let the water heat back up with the yarn in it.

Mixed about 1/2 teaspoon (heaping) of Violet to about 1 cup boiling water.

Added the dye to the pot.

Left to simmer on 4 for about 20-30 minutes.

Poured in 1 cup of vinegar.

Watched the magic happen.

When the water came out on a spoon clear, I made the mistake to empty the pot of water. I should have let the water and yarn cool together.

Let the yarn cool without its water.

Rinsed. No colour ran!!

Hung to dry.

As for the Year in Colour club, I've joined up again for the 2012 year. I am in love with Tanis Fiber Arts yarn and colours. They are amazing. January's colourway is called Truffle and the pattern was designed by Hannah Fettig and called Flying in Formation. The colour is a blend of purple, green and brown.
The Blueberry in space cowl is on hold... I didn't make it in time to finish with the KAL. I ended up twisting the cowl from the beginning and only noticed about 2 inches into it. I had to rip the entire thing and start anew. I'm back to the same spot, but I decided to start a new wrap for B's and my trip to Mexico at the beginning of April! I'm using my gorgeous madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in colourway Mica, bought over Christmas in Nanaimo. I'm knitting up Hannah Fettig's Panoramic Stole from the fabulous book Coastal Knits.

As for my "no buying yarn" goal for the year, I was able to last 2 months! Yesterday I bought some amazing yarn from Tanis' One of a Kind (OOAK) Etsy shop. More to come when it's been delivered!

Sad news, the LYS Knit-Knackers is moving to Smith Falls at the end of the month. I must go and stock up on some of the amazing sock yarn they have before they go. Their selection is great.

In cross-stitch news, I've been able to work some more on my cross-stitch. It's been years now since I've picked it up. Hopefully if I do a little bit of it each weekend I'll get it done in the next few months.

I haven't done any scrapbooking lately, but I think it has to do with my craft room/office still being so disorganized! It's tough to get things flowing and functional after a move. It's been 9 months, and it's still a work in progress.
Tankini Surfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15496384176229388561noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7336461875114942441.post-31830754623343696382012-01-09T18:09:00.000-08:002012-01-09T18:54:41.052-08:00A New Year - 2012I'm back from my trip out West to Vancouver Island, and this year I'm determined to write up my blog some more. I had a fantastic time out West, and was able to see some very beautiful scenery and some amazing yarn.

We visited the amazing Malaspina Galleries on Gabriola Island. These are a sandstone formation created by the erosion of the sandstone. Now that the boring stuff is done with, here's a great picture:

I loved walking along the shoreline, seeing views that you just don't get here. One of my favorite things to do was find rocks. Shells are hard to find, but I did manage to get my hands of some beach glass! My first ever. I also found a fantastic tile piece worn down by the waves.

My Christmas present this year was an amazing Cowichan vest, handspun and knit by Salish Coast knitters from around Duncan. It was knit by Henrietta Charlie from the Tseycum band.

We also did a little pottery shopping and I got these two amazing pieces, one with what the artist calls dimples (the starfish-looking one) and the other which is crystalline glazed work.

My stash has grown by a bit, mostly with madelinetosh. This yarn is not found here in the Ottawa River Valley (as far as I know anyway). And I just love it!

This year's goals will be to:
1) not buy any yarn. This will be a tough one.
2) knit up as much as I can/want from my stash.
3) knit up a number of last year's Tanis Fiber Arts' club patterns.

Right now I have 2 projects on the go, one shawl and one cowl.

The shawl is being knit from Malabrigo Light of Love and Velvet Grapes and is the Striped study shawl pattern. I'm calling it grape love study.

I just started the scarf the other day as a KAL with the Tanis Fiber Arts group on Ravelry. I'm knitting it in Pink Label in Bluberry. I blogged about my goals for the year back in February. You can read the post here.

Knitting:
1) I have still only knit 1 project from Tanis Fiber Arts' Year In Colour 2011 Club. There is a KAL in January, so I'm hoping to get one of the projects done. I happily signed up for a second year of Tanis' wonderful yarn, and cannot wait for my last 2011 shipment. It will be a pattern by Kristen Kapur! So exciting.
2) I knit 3 of the 19 projects with the KAL. I began a 4th, but didn't like the pattern, so I frogged it. I did manage to purchase almost all yarn needed to complete knitting my way through the book.
3) I matched up most of my stash so far with patterns. There are still a few I'm not sure about because I don't know how the yarn will knit up. I will have to knit up a test before deciding. I've knit up 2 items from my stash yarn.

Cross-stitch:
1) I still haven't touched my cross-stitch. I'm hoping when my new craft room is set up, I will be able to spend some time on this, but it may be in 2012.

Sewing:
1) I still haven't hemmed those trousers yet, but I did hem a pair of jeans, make curtains for our new place, hemmed others, and made a small bag to carry my knitting notions in. I'm feeling more comfortable behind the sewing machine, and hemming those trousers will be next.Tankini Surfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15496384176229388561noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7336461875114942441.post-14997264237895472932011-10-27T14:30:00.000-07:002011-10-27T14:32:28.892-07:00Tania Fiber Arts Red Label GiveawayTania Fiber Arts is having another giveaway! Thanks to ScrapArtist for the amazing digital scrapbooking material. I am especially in love with the cookie alphabet from Set My Soul on Fire.Tankini Surfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15496384176229388561noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7336461875114942441.post-44046881154714676422011-06-11T06:19:00.000-07:002011-06-11T06:44:01.371-07:00International Yarn Bombing Day - Gatineau, QuebecToday is the first ever International Yarn Bombing Day. It is in conjunction with the World Wide Knit in Public Day. My colleagues and I decided about a month ago to participate in the International Yarn Bombing Day. Here is our story.

T had a crazy idea about a month ago to yarnbomb something, anything, it didn't matter what. We were able to get 6 colleagues involved in the project. After much discussion about WHAT we were going to yarnbomb (a fire hydrant, bike rack, pole, trees), we decided on a park bench. There are always tons of people out walking on the path in Gatineau, Quebec and we thought it would be pretty simple to do. We could each knit or crochet (or both) a strip in whatever yarn, colour and pattern we liked, and then we'd stitch them all together to make a blanket of sorts. The result is a crazy, wild combination of colours, patterns, flowers, tassles, pom-poms and a sheep! The result:

We spent our lunch hour yesterday yarnbombing the bench as none of us could make it out today. We then surreptitiously, but probably obviously found a spot a little further down and watched if anyone would notice it. No one took the bait at first, but then two men walking down the path saw it. One looked a little outraged, maybe even thought it was a tourist's blanket that was saving the bench. He asked the gents sitting on the next bench if they knew anything about it, then he proceeded to look around the back where we tied on the blanket. Then, the most unexpected thing happened.... he smiled and the two men sat down on it!! For about half an hour. We were elated and excited at this turn of events. When we left that evening, the blanket was still there. We're hoping it lasts at least until Monday.

My favourite part of the whole experience was working together with other yarn crafters to create something together for the public to enjoy; the creation of dialogue between the crafter and an audience. Also, I loved the sheep.

Tankini Surfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15496384176229388561noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7336461875114942441.post-78210185978228241662011-04-20T14:24:00.000-07:002011-04-20T14:25:46.369-07:00TFA Giveaway!Tanis Fiber Arts is having a giveaway! I completed two socks from Cookie A's new book, Knit.Sock.Love, but I think I need a break from the sock knitting for a little while. I haven't completed my first project from Tanis' Year in Colour, and I've already received the second shipment!! I keep buying more yarn for making socks, and not using what's in my stash! I've been pretty good at matching up patterns with my stash though.

My cross-stitch goal has not been worked on at all.

My sewing goal has progressed, I've hemmed a pair of jeans! Next stop... trousers.

This weekend my friends from work and I are going on an Ottawa area yarn blitz before our friend E to return to Saskatoon. I'm hoping to get some yarn for socks, shawls and sweaters.Tankini Surfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15496384176229388561noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7336461875114942441.post-88665955673363045212011-02-19T19:01:00.000-08:002011-02-19T19:19:04.804-08:00Goals for 2011My knitting goals for 2011
1) I joined Tanis Fiber Arts' Year In Colour club. I've already hemmed my extraneously long curtains for practice and am hoping to test out a too long pair of pyjamas so I can hem my work pants. Very excited!Tankini Surfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15496384176229388561noreply@blogger.com0
